THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: CADENCE OF HYRULE REVIEW

To be honest I’ve waited so long for the physical release. I know this game is not a new one, but I didn’t play it while it was released in its digital form. I like game boxes and I like collecting Zelda stuff, so I told myself to wait, it’s not like it was a main Zelda title.

So yeah, I pre-ordered the game, it arrived to my home last Friday and between, work, social life and the whole pandemic thing going on, I managed to finish the main story today.

So I present you my opinion of the main game after I completed it, starting with…

Things that I liked about the game:

1. The whole graphic design of the game is befitting to the Zelda Series, it is like a more polished GBA game and let’s be honest, Minish Cap’s graphics were really good for a handheld game.

2. The random generated world, gives the game huge replay value.

3. The whole overworld is great, with very nice battles and overworld bosses that will reward you with Rupees, Diamonds or even main equipment like the Boomerang, Hookshot, Fire and Ice Rod etc.

4. Your main weapon can differ from a short sword, to a broad sword, a spear, a Longsword and even a Flail of all things. Experiment with them and find your favorite way of fighting against the hordes of darkness.

5. Dying makes you lose all your temporary items (torch, shovel, boots) and your rupees, bringing a Dark Souls death-penalty to the game, but don’t worry, all the important items remain in your arsenal.

6. Dungeons are also random generated, with the layout of the rooms changing even after you leave the Dungeon and return after a minute, the Dungeon rooms aren’t the same.

7. The story is very appealing with lots of fan service. Really, it can stand into the “Extended Timeline Theory” but that’s for another time.

8. Switching between characters can be very interesting and gives you the opportunity to find the game-style that suits you.

9. Okay, this one was a given but the soundtrack is AMAZING. I really mean AMAZING. I already had some playlists of the game saved to my pc to listen while working, but listening to this music while playing is literally perfect. 10/10 to the music score.

Now let’s get to some things that weren’t that great:

1. Although you have a huge arsenal of items (once again), you will only use mostly bombs, the Hookshot and the Power Glove. All the other items are pretty stiff to use and at the same time most of them use your stamina meter (like MP). I really didn’t find one place that I HAD to use both Rods (since you can use Fire or Ice Arrows for the same purpose) or the Cane of Somaria.

2. The gameplay is hard at first, it needs time for the player to get used to it. Prepare to die A LOT in the beginning of the game.

3. Even though the Map gives you enough hints about where to go and find some important items, it’s really difficult to find everything, since if you die, all monsters of the overworld respawn making your “item-hunting” even more difficult.

4. The game doesn’t make clear what is going on in “Future Hyrule”. Really, you can visit it only at the end of the game via Hyrule Castle, defeat Ganon and skip the whole “Future Hyrule” exploration and nothing will change (at least from what I’ve experienced in these 12 hours of gameplay). I Finished the game but I only found one of the “Future Hyrule” instruments and at the same time, I can’t find a way to visit Death Mt. there, leaving my game un-complete.

In conclusion, does Cadence of Hyrule worth your time? The short answer is “yes”. The game is great for a Zelda fan that doesn’t want to embark on a 50-hour quest, but at the same time wants to play some Zelda. It’s something unique and if you ask me, I would love a sequel to this game.

At the end of the game, my Quest Log was looking like:

16 Hearts

31 Deaths

Broadswords: Titanium, Glass, Fragarach

Spears: Obsidian, Titanium, Impa’s Naginata
